Journal — FUEGO
What FUEGO asks of you.
FUEGO
I need to tell you something before we talk about the stone.
I booked a birthday trip to Puerto Rico when I was 29. Thirty was coming fast, and I'd spent two years doing the quiet, unglamorous work of reconnecting with myself — my roots, my history, the parts of me I'd set aside to survive.
I followed incense into a bead shop I hadn't planned to enter. The shop madre asked if I'd like my selections made into a necklace. That question cracked something open.
Standing at that counter, watching her hands work, I was pulled back to my grandmother knitting blankets for me in winter. To the occasions when my mom's "good" jewelry came out — each piece a story, a transfer of something unspoken. Those handmade things were how the women in my family said: you matter. You are held. You belong to something.
When I walked out of that bead shop, I knew what I had to build.
Linda & Lilo is named for two moms — Linda, who adopted me, and Lilo, who carried me. Everything this brand stands for — love made tangible, craft as care, beauty as a form of protection — I learned from watching them.
FUEGO came from that same knowing.
What Carnelian actually is.
Carnelian has been carried for thousands of years by people who needed to move. Warriors before battle. Orators before they spoke. Healers who had to show up even when they were afraid. Ancient Egyptians buried it with the dead to carry them safely into the next world. In every tradition, its association is the same: action in the face of hesitation.
Fire is not aggression. Fire is clarity. Fire is the thing that burns away what you've been performing so you can finally remember what you actually are underneath all of it.
We named this piece FUEGO because that's what Carnelian asks of you. Not fearlessness. Movement. Just one step taken from the place you actually stand.
Who FUEGO is for.
FUEGO is for the person who has been managing everyone else's comfort at the expense of their own momentum.
It's for the creative who knows exactly what they need to make but keeps finding reasons to wait until they're more ready, more certain, more something.
It's for the person standing at the edge of a decision they've already made in their body — who just needs something on their wrist to remind them that the fire was theirs all along.
I've seen what happens when someone finds the right stone at the right moment. Not magic. Recognition. The bracelet doesn't give you anything you don't already have. It just keeps asking the question until you answer it.
A note on how I make these.
Every LA PILA bracelet is hand-strung in Chicago. I work with genuine 8mm Carnelian beads — no dye, no filler stone. The color you see is what the earth made. No two pieces are identical because no two pieces of Carnelian are identical. The stone carries its own history before it ever reaches your wrist.
I set an intention with each piece before it leaves. That's not marketing language. That's just how I was taught things get made — with presence, not just production.
The bracelet doesn't give you anything you don't already have. It just keeps asking the question until you answer it.
Your Journal Prompt
What would you do today if you weren't managing anyone else's reaction to you?
Write the version that embarrasses you a little. That's usually the real one.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for choosing to come back to yourself. FUEGO will find its way to your wrist soon — or maybe it already has. Either way, I'm glad you're reading this. This brand exists because I needed it to. I hope you feel that in everything we make. With love from Chicago.
